Door Installation & Repair FAQ

Common Questions

Why do my doors stick in summer but not winter?
North Texas humidity causes wood doors and frames to expand in summer. This is extremely common in the DFW area. Planing the door edge or adjusting the hinges usually solves the problem. If it happens every year, the door may need to be trimmed slightly.
Should I replace just the door slab or the whole pre-hung unit?
If the existing frame is square and in good condition, replacing just the slab is cheaper. If the frame is warped, damaged, or out of square, a pre-hung door is the better choice since it comes with a new frame and is easier to install plumb and level.
Can I upgrade from a hollow-core to a solid-core interior door?
Yes, and it’s a worthwhile upgrade. Solid-core doors are heavier, reduce noise between rooms, and feel more substantial. The existing hinges may need to be upgraded to support the extra weight, which a handyman can handle during installation.
What causes a door to sag and not latch properly?
Sagging is usually caused by loose hinge screws, especially the top hinge. Over time, screws pull out of the wood. Replacing them with longer 3-inch screws that reach the wall framing often fixes the problem without any other adjustments.
Do I need to paint a new door after installation?
Most pre-hung interior doors come primed but not painted. You’ll need to apply at least two coats of paint after installation. Some doors come pre-finished, but they cost more.
How long does it take to replace an interior door?
A pre-hung interior door replacement typically takes 1-2 hours. If the opening needs modification or the frame needs repair, it may take 2-3 hours. Replacing just the door hardware takes about 30 minutes.
