Roof Ventilation FAQ
Common Questions
Why is attic ventilation important?
Proper ventilation removes heat and moisture from your attic, extending the life of your roof and shingles, reducing cooling costs in summer, and preventing moisture damage, mold growth, and ice dams.
How does a solar attic fan work?
A solar attic fan uses a built-in solar panel to power a fan that actively pulls hot air out of the attic. It operates during the sunniest hours when attic heat is greatest, requires no electrical wiring, and has minimal operating costs.
What are soffit vents and why do I need them?
Soffit vents are installed in the underside of your roof overhang. They allow cool outside air to enter the attic at the lowest point, creating airflow that pushes hot air up and out through ridge vents or attic fans.
How much ventilation does my attic need?
The general rule is 1 square foot of ventilation for every 150 square feet of attic space, split evenly between intake (soffit) and exhaust (ridge or fan) vents. Your roofer can calculate the exact requirements for your home.
Can I add ventilation to my existing roof?
Yes. Ridge vents can be added during a reroof or as a standalone project. Solar attic fans and additional soffit vents can be installed without major modifications to your roof structure.
How do I know if my attic has enough ventilation?
Signs of poor ventilation include an extremely hot attic in summer, moisture or frost on the underside of the roof deck, peeling paint on exterior walls, and premature shingle deterioration. A professional can assess your ventilation needs.
What is a ridge vent?
A ridge vent is a continuous vent installed along the peak of your roof. It allows hot air to escape naturally as it rises, providing even ventilation across the entire attic. It is considered the most effective type of exhaust vent.
